The Town of the sun: journey between the wonders of Naples and Sorrento
Naples
Our part leaves from Naples, splendid pearl in the South of Italy, whose beauty inspires poets, singers and painters. Between the different monuments representing Naples, the Castel dell’ Ovo is one of the most majestic. A Neapolitan legend takes its name to the egg that Virgil would have hidden in a cage in the castle’s undergrounds. The place where the egg was preserved was closed by locks and kept secret because “from the egg derived all the li facti and the fortune of Marine Castle”.
Maschio Angioino
The Maschio Angioino or, most correctly, Castelnuovo, was built between the 1279 and the 1282 from Charles I d’Angiò and used as real palace under its dynasty. At the time of Robert d’Angiò stayed there, between the others Petrarca and Boccaccio. Imposing the five towers in piperno and tuff delimitating the deep walls. The arch of triumph in marble, between the towers of Mezzo and Guardia, was built in the half of the ‘400 by Francesco Laurana and celebrates the entrance of Alfonso I from Aragona on the 26th February 1443 in Naples. Today the building hosts the Civic Museum.
Capodimonte Palace
Haunting reserve of the homonymous hill. Ferdinand IV and Gioacchino Murat lived there and in 1950 it became National Museum. In the sitting room, it host works of Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Caravaggio and Tiziano and an important collection of porcelains. The wide park surrounding the palace is the main green lung of the city.
Sorrento
World touristic destination from a not discussed fascination, Sorrento connects artistic beauty to a crystalline sea. Visit the Cathedral, in Romanic style, rising to the XVth century. The church hosts clots of artists from the Neapolitan school of the ‘700, a bishop throne in chosen marbles (1573) and a wooden chorus, work of the crafts men in Sorrento.
You must do a promenade in Piety Street, the most significant of the ancient urban streets, for the important architectonic works: Verniero Palace, Correale Palace and the narrow street Galantario Loggia.
Panuozzo from Gragnano
Called rough because of its brown colour, in contraposition to the candour of the cereal flour, it was produced in Benevento, where once was really developed the corn cultivation, that left numerous traces in the regional food. The ideal link is the remixed vegetables, the salamis and the typical cheeses of the zone.
