Favignana's island
Are you dreaming a bit of safe relax? It exists a place able to lat you forget the town life in few time: Favignana, splendid Mediterranean island (the major in the Egadi islands). Wet by a really fished sea and characterized by an impressing limpidity, the island takes its name from Favonio, a warm wind coming from the West, and has the peculiar shape of a butterfly with the bent flies. The territory is dominated by a relieve, The Saint Catherine Mountain, 310 m high.
From here you discover the rich variety of spices and wild plants, typical of the Mediterranean spot; and you arrive to the ancient fortress (that you can visit), dominating all the island, above all getting into the towers you have the possibility to completely admire Favignana. The coast is above all rocky, but you can accede to the most part of it. Splendid the white and pink sandy beaches.
The visitor, fascinated by the thin and rocky vegetation, is helped during the work by the presence of many hilly roads, that you can easily do also by bike, and that easily allow to do the circle of the all island. The Faraglione’s and Pozzo’s Caves are really suggesting in Saint Nicola zone), where you can see human traces, rising at 10.000 b.C. where, looking at the sea, you see the work of the Ancient Romans, denominated “women’s bath”, a whole of pools fed by under marine canals.
In the VIIIth century populated by the Fenix, from who nowadays you can see living’s and funeral’s caves, Favignana was also the centre of the Punic Wars, established the supremacy of the Roman people in Sicily. At the fall of the Empire, they followed the numerous Barbaric and Saracen invasions (the sight towers present on the Saint Catherine Mountain were edified by these last ones and then transformed into a fortress by the Normans). In the XIVth century the island, was then conquered by the Angioin people and then by the Aragon people.
Around the half of the XVIIth century, the island’s government passed into the ends of Giacomo Frignoni from Genova and then, with Philip IIIrd, it was sold to Camillo Pllavicino. Thanks to this last one, the Favignana’s inhabitants incremented the agriculture and the fishing activities. But the top was achieved in 1874, when Ignazio Florio bought the Egadi islands for three millions from the Pallavicino’s, implanted the major European point to work the fish and enforced the tuna. Visit Florio Palace, built in 1876 near the port ( at the moment location of the local policemen).
Between the monument of the island, it is really graceful the main church, Madrice, dedicated to the Conception Virgin Mary. With its shape and cross, it was posed in a decentred position respect to the square to allow the sea sight and the guns’ launch from the Saint Giacomo’s Forte (nowadays prison). Inside you preserve a wood crucifix of the VIIIth century and a marble statue dedicated to Saint Anthony from Padova.
The point Florio is, instead, an extraordinary example of industrial architecture where there was, till few years ago, the working to preserve the tuna. Finally, Favignana is particularly known for the beautiful Cale, completely reflecting the beauty of the marine fondals, and often create a poetic contrast with the surrounding white tuff walls. Perfumes, colours, traditions, not comparable beauties: all this is Favignana!
Mafalda
It is a bread from the gilded crust and the delicate and characteristic taste of sesamo’s seeds. Between the most spread in the island, it is made into different shapes, between them “Saint Lucy’s eyes” and “Corona”. This last one is obtained cutting into two points the superior side of a small bread as half moon – not superior to the 3 hectograms – that throw the yeasting and cooking opens itself like a fan in the marked part, let it look like a crown.
